Information |
Painter and sculptor John Neville Foulkes (1937-1997) was born and lived all his life in Llanberis. On leaving school, he found employment at Dinorwic Quarry, where he worked for many years. The exhibition at the National Slate Museum, which runs until 30 June 2013, features a small selection of Foulkes’ work, much of which was strongly influenced by his experience of working in the slate quarry. |

I like these so much more, very fitting with your dark mine photos.

Thanks, Lynn. It was good to see these in the context of the Slate Museum (and ex quarry)

Fascinating…very honest and direct work, all the better for it’s naive quality. You can really feel his experience without much effort on the part of the viewer. I saw this exhibition mentioned in a thread on AditNow and meant to go and see, so thanks for putting this up.

No worries, Iain. The exhibition is quite small, but worth a look if you happen to be near Llanberis.

He had a nice simple, pictorial style. It’s nice when an artist has genuine empathy and insight into the subject he reproduces.

Yes, I found his uncomplicated graphic style was very effective in portraying his subject matter.

His work reminds me of american painter, Thomas Hart Benton. Same earthy subject matter and honest portrayals. Nice post.

Thanks for that reference – I’ve been having a look at some of THB’s work and like the almost Dalíesque qualities of his paintings.
