Penrhyn Quarry was first developed in the 1770s by Richard Pennant, the first Baron Penrhyn, and was at one stage the world’s largest slate quarry. Today it is operated by Welsh//Slate Ltd.

wow–these are simply incredible. That ‘caban’ is simply astounding. Imagine the lives given over to mining this enormous pit. What a mean, difficult, trying way to eke out an existence.

Great photos. The ladders in particular capture the fragile, dangerous nature of work on the mountain. How did you get to the caban? Is there an easy (child friendly) way there?

this is a superb collection of images which I have thoroughly enjoyed. It serves to remind us all of the hardships dangers and sacrifices those 18000 slate workers faced daily in their ambitions to feed and educate their families
