Information

The new Ogwen Visitor Centre was officially opened in July 2013. Construction started in September 2012 and the new building features a multimedia interpretation area, food kiosk and toilets in addition to the Snowdonia National Park warden’s office. Designed by Anglesey-based DEWIS Architecture and constructed using local materials from quarries in Bethesda and Blaenau Ffestiniog, the new centre replaces the previous 1970s-built facilities. The project was managed by a partnership formed by the Snowdonia National Park Authority, the Countryside Commission for Wales, and the National Trust, and was funded with EU support through the Communities and Nature initiative.

  1. I like your photographs, Graham, as always. The interactive model looks great. I applaud the use of local materials, especially the slate from “Cwt-y-Bugail” sic. It’s just my ignorant opinion, but I don’t think the building either reflects it’s surroundings, complements them or sits properly in the landscape. Its’s bland, yet inappropriate somehow. I wanted to like it, but I can’t. Love the fence pic, however, and you have done the best that could be done with the structure! Sorry for being a curmudgeon! 🙂

    • Thanks, Iain, and no worries on the curmedgeonliness – chacun a son gout, as they say 😉 I think it is certainly an improvement over what was there before. And at least the interpretation room should make a pleasant area out of the rain to have your butties compared to the previous dingy shelter.
