Information

For around 150 years there was industrial activity at Cults, near Cupar in Fife, centred around the limestone mine there. A limeworks was in operation there until 2002 and the sand-cement brickworks closed in 2004. The latter was operated by Cults Brick Limited, which was incorporated in 1962 and finally wound up in 2007.

Closure of brickworks marks end of an era (Fife Today, 18 November 2004)

One of the plant’s two ball mills. Steel balls tumbling in a cascade motion inside the rotating horizontal cylinder would crush clinker from a cement kiln into fine powder.

  1. Another brickworks bites the dust. There can’t be that many left now, they’re regularly closing or being mothballed. I like the shot of the goggles – it’s always nice to see some reminder that these places were worked by regular people once, who hung up their stuff one day, and never returned.

  2. The weird stalking continues…given a tour of this place by my cousin same day as I was at the priory. Good timing as well because some of the buildings in your photographs are due to be demolished soon. There are abandoned mines and remains in the hill and woods above the works that I think have been explored by Abandoned Scotland et al although probably quite dangerous for the inexperienced explorer (which includes me).

My cousin is planning to write a history of the works for the Fife archives.

    Great photography as always.

  3. It does but ur photos brought back memories I was there 1981 till 1992 and on and off about 2 years after that
