Information

The 20 ft tall, golden statue of Shirley Bassey, installed on the glass balcony on the walls of Caernarfon Castle, was unveiled on 1 April 2016 to herald the start of the Get Creative Weekend. The work, which was on show for the duration of the artistic event, is entitled Bassey’s Cry and was created by Welsh interdisciplinary artist Marc Rees (b 1966). It took 600 hours to make and was sculpted from polystyrene, which was then covered in fibreglass and then filled and painted. The figure is styled after Boudicca (died c 60 CE), Queen of the Iceni – a Celtic tribe living in what is now eastern England – who led a revolt against the occupying Romans. The hole in the statue in the place of the heart is, according to the artist, a symbolic reference to art being the ‘beating heart … of any community’.

Welsh vocal artist Shirley Bassey was born in Cardiff in 1937 and is best known for singing the theme songs of three James Bond films (Goldfinger, Diamonds Are Forever, and Moonraker). She was made a Dame Commander of the Order of the British Empire (DBE) in 1999.

  1. Not surprised Lloyd George is looking askance, that heart is in entirely the wrong place, should be just under the lower part of her left lady bit. (Boob). If your going to have a ‘representative heart’ at least have it in the right part of the body. 20 foot tall?? Ye gods. I wonder what she thinks of it. It is good though. Great photo’s as always 🙂

  2. I just listened to some songs performed by Shirley Bassey on youtube… she has quite a voice, reminds me of the “Hair” movie too 🙂

have you attended the Get Creative Weekend too, Graham? 🙂

  3. It looks as if King Midas had given Ms.Bassey the golden touch. That’s quite a rock she’s wearing, as well! My parents used to listen to her — she has quite the powerful voice.

  4. Well I like it (and the images of course) – she is a Welsh National Treasure and I get the associations with gold & diamonds – Goldfinger & Diamonds are Forever. The Boedicaea bit may refer to her determination to overcome her early struggles as a mixed-race woman trying to make it in an openly prejudiced era?
