The lions were there on the original rail bridge, having “pride” of place welcoming rail passengers in both directions. When the new road deck was added above the rail level when the bridge was rebuilt in 1980, the lions were left mostly hidden from view.

Yeah, they have been a bit neglected and forgotten about. Access to that one is quite overgrown and it is difficult to get good view of any of the four of them. There has been talk over the years of raising them to the road-deck level of bridge, but nothing ever happens…
The lion has an Egyptian sphinx look about it 🙂 Human mouth and the neat little top knot 🙂 🙂

Original construction of the bridge used limestone from Penmon, so presumably the lions were created from the same material?
