Britannia Bridge
Inside Cathedral Abutment. The abutment supports the end of Britannia Bridge where it meets the sloping ground at its Anglesey end. The masonry structure is hollow with internal brick-built pillars supporting its barrel-vaulted roof upon which the railway trackbed rests. The abutment was reinforced in 2011 when major repairs to the bridge were carried out.

Thanks, Iain! I always think it’s a shame those wonderful lions are not more generally accessible / visible.

Brilliant post! I crossed the bridge on a few occasions, and even took a picture of Menai bridge on my way. What a magnificent construction.

Not the most elegant of bridges as seen from the usual angle of crossing it, but your view of the arched metal underside does make it appear so. Not somewhere you’d want to hang out for long, but I too like the graffiti.

🙂 Yes, it does seem a lot more interesting from underneath.
